Local Red Cross Honors West Valley Teen
(PHOENIX) April 19, 2010 – Grand Canyon Chapter volunteers, including one
from Laveen, were honored at the annual Volunteer Recognition event held at the
Black Canyon Conference Center in Phoenix on Saturday, April 17, 2010.
Marcie Dorman, of Laveen, received the Outstanding Youth award which is given
to a young person who demonstrates leadership in improving a program that
supports their community and the Red Cross Mission.
The teen founded Phoenix’s Sunnyslope High School Red Cross Club two years
ago. She’s been the president for the last two years motivating members to get
involved in community service projects with St. Vincent de Paul, the VA Hospital
and Christmas Angel Tree charity.
“Marcie’s energy and desire to help is contagious,” said Ashleigh DeWitt, Red
Cross Youth Club Sponsor. “She’s inspired a lot of people to get involved. She’s
even named a successor who can carry on the tradition.”
Marcie’s work didn’t stop at community service. She also ensured every club
members became certified in Red Cross CPR and First Aid so they will be prepared
for an emergency.
Red Cross volunteers touch the lives of Arizonans every day by providing
disaster relief, teaching people how to save lives and keeping Arizona military
families connected by relaying critical messages around the world.
Red Cross volunteers, like Marcie, are everyday heroes. During our last
fiscal year, volunteers gave more than 160,000 hours of service potentially
saving the chapter $3,135,706 dollars!
### About the American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter

come together to help each other every day. The volunteer-led organization
serves more than 4.4 million people in communities across Apache, Coconino,

disasters, emergency assistance to members of the Armed Forces, preparedness and

assistance for refugees. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on
the generosity of our Arizona neighbors in the forms of time, money, and blood
to do its work. To make a financial donation, enroll for a lifesaving skills
