American Red Cross Honors Humanitarians

(PHOENIX) April 22, 2010 – The American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter awarded three Deborah King Humanitarian Awards at the Community Leaders Breakfast held at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix this morning. David Tedesco, Managing Partner, True North Companies received the individual award while the General Motors LLC (GM) and the Barrett-Jackson Auto Company received the corporate award.

The Deborah King awards are given to those who have demonstrated their commitment and support to the American Red Cross locally and nationally through their generous contributions of resources, knowledge and time. The award pays tribute to a humanitarian who served the Red Cross for more than 30 years, Deborah King. To honor her legacy of caring and service, her husband, John, established these awards in her name.

David Tedesco is a true partner of the Grand Canyon Chapter through leadership, volunteer service and financial contributions. Dave served on the Board of Directors from 2003-2008. His last three years, he led the chapter as the board chair. David believes it’s the responsibility of business and social leaders to give back to the community. His support for the Grand Canyon Chapter has changed lives.

“I have witnessed lives being turned around after disasters deliver devastation,” said David Tedesco. “Witnessing that transformation has deepened my passion for this humanitarian organization.”

General Motors donated a 2008 Chevrolet Corvette coupe limited edition #427 while the Barrett-Jackson Auction Show (Jan. 18-24) provided the platform. Together, they raised $250,000 to help the Red Cross delivery emergency aid to people devastated by the earthquake in Haiti.

“When there’s a need, General Motors never hesitates to help,” said Sean Finegan, General Motors Corporate Event Vehicle Manager. “Supporting the Red Cross earthquake relief effort became a priority for us. GM employees also supported the effort in a variety of ways including gate drives.”

The same holds true for the Barrett-Jackson Auto Company. “We have a long tradition of supporting charities by helping them raise both awareness and funds through our automotive lifestyle events,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson.

“We’re pleased that our partnership with the Red Cross has helped countless lives in Haiti and we look forward to continuing this important work.” Since its inception, The Barrett-Jackson Auto Company has generated more than $31 million for charities across the country.

During this year’s event along with their Scottsdale and Palm Beach events, the company helped raise over $5 million dollars for various charities this year.

The Red Cross Community Leaders Breakfast focused on partnerships and Service to the Armed Forces. General Victor E. Renuart, Jr. was the keynote speaker. He is the Commander of NORAD and the U.S. Northern Command at Peterson Air Force Base, CO.
