Two Additional Arizona Red Cross Volunteers Deploy to Tennesse

(PHOENIX, AZ) Monday, May 17, 2010 — From the plains of the Midwest to the Deep South, the American Red Cross is providing a safe place to stay and relief supplies for thousands of people displaced by tornadoes and floods. Relief operations continue in full force across Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama and Oklahoma.

“Storms have left thousands across the country without homes; without any belongings,” said Joe Becker, Senior Vice President for Red Cross Disaster Services. “Our disaster teams are in the Midwest and across the South, and will be there for as long as it takes to help people get back on their feet.”

In addition to the Grand Canyon Chapter’s previously deployed volunteers, two additional volunteers will fly out of Sky Harbor International Airport tomorrow.

Serving as a Red Cross Mental Health Worker, Joseph Mann of Tempe will be the first to deploy tomorrow and he will be available for interviews. A Red Cross veteran of eight prior deployments, his role will be to provide assistance to those individuals struggling to cope with the ravages of the devastation faced in Nashville.

Joseph Mann will be departing on Southwest Airlines flight 0976 on Tuesday morning and will be available outside the security checkpoint for his flight at 7:30am. If you would like to confirm the interview, please contact Mark Weldon at (602) 819-9213.

Later in the day, Yuma resident and Red Cross Nurse Nabarrete Trinidad will be departing. She is also a veteran with eight prior deployments to her credit. She would prefer to give phone interviews only. Again, contact Mark at (602) 819-9213 to request an interview.

Meanwhile, more than 1,100 Red Cross workers from 37 different states have shelters open across the impacted region. To date, the Red Cross has served approximately 300,000 meals and snacks, and distributed more than 36,000 clean-up and comfort kits.

There are three ways that people can make a donation to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund: Visit www.arizonaredcross.org to donate online, call 1-800-REDCROSS, or make a $10 donation by texting REDCROSS to 90999.

Help people affected by disasters like the recent floods and tornadoes by donating to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. On those rare occasions when donations exceed Red Cross expenses for a specific disaster, contributions are used to prepare for and serve victims of other disasters. Your gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for disasters and provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance to victims of all disasters. Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to the American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter at 6135 N. Black Canyon Highway, Phoenix AZ 85015. Internet users can make a secure online contribution by visiting www.arizonaredcross.org.
