Local Volunteer Joins Others to Support the People of Tennessee

(Phoenix, AZ) Friday May 7, 2010 – Grand Canyon Chapter volunteer, Shannon Durham is deploying to Memphis, TN tomorrow in support of the devastating flooding that has impacted that region. In recent weeks the Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter has deployed a total of five local volunteers to assist in Alabama, Mississippi and now Tennessee. The Red Cross has deployed more than 1,100 volunteers into that region to assist the local Red Cross efforts. Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter Communications Manager and Public Information Officer Tracey Kiest was recently deployed to Alabama, however, she has since been reassigned to support the Tennessee flooding near Memphis. Tracey is available for media interviews remotely if you would like a “front line” update regarding the scope of the flooding and how Arizona volunteers are assisting.

Shannon Durham will work as a Disaster Mental Health Volunteer during her deployment. That means she will be working directly with Red Cross clients that have been impacted by the flooding. The Ahwatukee resident will focus her efforts on Red Cross shelters, however, she could be used in a mobile capacity to provide comfort and aid in flood stricken communities.

Durham has been with the organization for a brief time, however, her professional counseling background and compassion will certainly be beneficial to the people she will be assisting.

Red Cross volunteers have to make a three week commitment when going on a national assignment. They often face physical hardships.

Durham is departing from terminal 2 at the Sky Harbor Airport on United Airlines tomorrow. She will be outside of the security area at 6:30am and she will be joined by Mark Weldon, Red Cross Chapter Director of Communications. If you’re interested in talking to either of us, please call Mark at 602.819.9213 or email mweldon@arizonaredcross.org. I can provide Tracey Kiest’s contact information as well for interview purposes during her deployment.
