Red Cross Helping 30+ Following Apartment Fire in Phoenix (PHOENIX) June 17, 2010 - Grand Canyon Chapter volunteers are on the scene of an apartment fire near 19th Ave. and Northern in Phoenix. Twelve Red Cross emergency responders are making damage assessments and meeting with clients to determine their immediate needs. The Red Cross will ensure everyone has a safe place to sleep. Also, Grand Canyon Chapter volunteers are providing 32 people (15 adults and 17 children) with the means to obtain food, clothing, and other essentials. Volunteers also passed out comfort kits which include a comb, toothbrush, toothpaste and soap. Red Cross nurses are helping clients with medical issues such as getting prescriptions filled. Counselors are available to offer emotional support as people start to come to grips with what happened. Over the next several days, Grand Canyon Chapter caseworkers will monitor the clients and provide referrals, as they begin their road to recovery. The Grand Canyon chapter responded to 534 disasters during our last fiscal year. The Red Cross is able to meet the immediate needs of our neighbors in need through the generous support of Arizonans.
