How You Can Help

Disaster Services

Trained volunteers are ready, willing and able to help families and individuals who have suffered loss from a disaster – a home fire, flash flood, microburst, wildfire or other event that may affect one person or thousands. These volunteers respond any time of the day or night, to assess needs and provide immediate emergency assistance, which may include food, shelter and clothing, as well as emotional support, assistance in the replacement of health-related items, and case management.

During Fiscal Year 2008-2009, your Red Cross chapter:

·     Responded to 534 local disasters, of which 95% involved home fires

·       Asisted 676 families, including 1,408 adults and 900 children

·       Arranged for 1,209 nights of emergency shelter at nearby hotels and motels for 1,259 individuals

·       Provided an average of $607 in direct financial assistance per family

Preparedness & Safety Solutions:

Health and Safety Training and Education

Every day, people in our community are helped because someone was trained in American Red Cross lifesaving skills. This training ranges from CPR/First Aid certification, including classes in Spanish, to Babysitter training for youth. Additionally, we train the majority of lifeguards and water instructors in our 10-county chapter.

During Fiscal Year 2008-2009, Red Cross-certified instructors in Arizona trained:

  •  32,452 individuals in CPR, first aid, AED and other life-saving classes
  •  46,205 individuals in lifeguarding, learn-to-swim and water safety classes
  •  498 youth and family members in Babysitting and Family Caregiving
  •  2,230 people in community disaster education and preparedness
  •  749 new Red Cross-certified instructors, to fulfill the training needs of the members of our communities
